Dear Catholic Higher Ups,
Let’s step out of the Dark Ages, eh?
Contraception allows a woman control over her reproductive life and gives her freedom to pursue an education and a career before having (if ever having) a family.
Controlling that basic bodily function is absolutely necessary if women are ever to achieve parity in society.
It’s time, Catholic Higher Ups (MEN), to stop treating women as lesser...

A poem
Dear Liver, Dear Liver,
I think your color is brown
Dear Liver, Dear Liver,
With whiskey I you drown
Dear Liver, Dear Liver,
I promise to be good
Dear Liver, Dear Liver,
If you promise not too brood
What whiskey movie night is teaching me is I'm not...
I think my liver hates me.
Someone bring me french fries.
I will pay you in cat fur.
Movie night with friends means whiskey and...

I want to marry her brain she’s so smart.
Seriously, two of the best classes I’ve ever taken — undergraduate or graduate — were with this woman.
I’m so freaking excited.

Disenchanted fan.
Let me be clear here, I’m a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan. I know what losing is all about. And what it’s like to hold out hope year after year.
When I moved to Alabama I became a Colts fan because, when the Titans weren’t on, it was the Colts. And, as I couldn’t root for the Titans as they’d formerly been the Oilers and because I grew up hearing about Johnny U from...

Maria Bello.
I also love her and am so sad Prime Suspect got cancelled. The writing wasn’t great, but she was amazing in it. (Basically I want to drink a lot of scotch and shoot a gun and punch bad guys.)
Dangling participles.
Doesn’t that sound dirty?

Marion Cotillard.
Wow, she’s amazing. Le Vie En Rose is one of my favorite movies.
Let me tell you how much I love grading grammar...
Not at all.
I hate grammar.
I don’t want to teach it. Subjects, objects, bah-jects.
Oooh, these are good.

Judy Greer
I had to look her up and then when I saw her face I was like, “Oh, her, I really like her.”

Well, there are a lot of similarities between us. The glasses, the hair, the food and just generally being a disaster.

I’ve been thinking about it myself. I heard the way they staged the ending was HORRIBLE, though.
Oh, no, six hours is a long time to sit still for an opera to only have the ending botched!

It had better be someone badass.
For dinner tonight in Chez rosieloveswords:...
Because sometimes you just need comfort food.
(And whiskey; I’m gonna have some whiskey.)

So, is wanting to watch Gotterdammerung crazy?
It’s live in HD this weekend at our local theater Saturday.
It’s also six hours.
That’s a long time to spend with Wagner on a Saturday afternoon. But I think I just might do it.
I had a freelancing gig just fall into my lap.
It pays to do your job well, kiddos. People will recommend you for stuff and you will make the monies.
Also, I think I’m changing my URL soon. I’m going to create a new Tumblr account for the research I’m thinking of doing but even having my nickname in the URL of this one makes me worried they’ll somehow wind up linked. I would rather that not happen.
When/if I do change...

Twitter Duty
We have a Twitter account, normally I have someone who handles this. Two days a week, though, I do.
I tweet a news story that might me of interest to our audience — produced by other outlets — once an hour between 10 am and 6 pm.
Twitter duty.
Guess who forgot she's on Twitter duty for work?
Moi.
Luckily, it’s not hard to get caught up.
anarchyandscotch replied to your post: My students are tanking on the news quizzes.
My $0.02: part of writing the news is reading the news. They don’t become better journalists unless they’re keeping up with current events and reading the work of other journalists. If they’re not doing that, their grades SHOULD suffer for it.
Yes, and I agree with you largely. That’s the whole reason I...

My students are tanking on the news quizzes.
There are ten over the course of the semester and they count for 10% of their grades.
I changed things up and the second one was actually a quiz on journalistic terms and concepts. I had questions about lead and nut graphs (I hate that term) attribution. They did pretty well on that one.
I’m considering scrapping the last five quizzes altogether. I’d like their grade to be a...

The thing about growing up in poverty is that it...
The fear. The worry. The feeling that you’re being slowly suffocated by a system that does not give a damn about you or your family or your hopes and dreams.
The thing about growing up in poverty is that you never grow out of it. No matter how comfortable or successful you become there’s always the fear; always the doubt.
Sometimes you wake up in a cold sweat because you’re...

Truths
I am having a really rough time right now. Some days I want to talk about it and other days I just want to hide under the covers and pretend nothing - not even I - exist.
I really love grouchy days. I’m typically so nice and considerate and empathetic and grouchy days just let me stew and feel mean.
Of course tomorrow I’ll feel bad about my grouchy day.

Bulky, bald and tall, Boisjoly was an imposing figure, especially when armed with data. He found disturbing the data he reviewed about the booster rockets that would lift Challenger into space. Six months before the Challenger explosion, he predicted “a catastrophe of the highest order” involving “loss of human life” in a memo to managers at Thiokol.
The problem,...
