Dear Ovaries,
I am just getting over food poisoning, making me want a fast food burger and fries is not nice!  Screw you, I’m having toast.

I'm home working today.
Taking care of Twitter and some school stuff. I’ve already got the majority of stuff I needed to get done, done. So I think I’m going to make a pot of tea and watch a movie or two and enjoy a bit of a down day. I have no idea what I’m going to watch but there will be British accents and frippery.

Sometimes I despair.
For the last four years I’ve been working on a project which aims to bridge intercultural divides between Muslims and non-Muslims. (I prefer not to link from this blog, but will send you the link if you ever ask.) Going into the project I knew the basics of Islam. I knew there were Sunni and Shia. I did not know about the Sufi, although I’d read Sufi poetry for years. I knew about the...

Because I’m starving and tired of white, no flavor foods. I felt like that was a pretty safe choice. That sandwich was the tastiest thing ever. Although, not being able to eat anything that’s not a salty starch for two days would probably make anything taste good.

anarchyandscotch replied to your post: Tomorrow I’m talking with my students about interviewing. MOS Day was always the most popular day when I taught J200. That’s good to know. I didn’t do it last semester because I was making so much of everything up along as I went. I think we watched some interviews and talked about them.

I think, instead of lecturing, I’m going to have them circle the wagons and we’re going to have a conversation. One in which I ask questions of them, and hopefully, model good interview behavior. Then I’m going to send them out do MOS (man on the street) interviews about our basketball team. So they have to actually interview a stranger and learn how to take good notes for...

City on the hill.
Have any of the politicians that use that line actually read the book that line comes from?  Or John Winthrop’s sermon that used it?  It’s about charity. The light that shines is a light of love and charity and faith in each other. I hate when politicians trot that line out like it’s something profound; it loses its beauty when it comes out of the mouth of someone who does not...

Who's drinking broth and eating ramen for dinner...
This one. I should know better than to eat food from our dining hall unless it’s soup from the salad bar. Everytime I do eat something I get violently ill. Eat lunch, thirty minutes later, just as class is about to start, feel nauseated and shivering and altogether not good. I am usually very careful about what I eat because of the IBS. When I stray it’s never good.

More Journalism Advice
journalofajournalist: Stories are everywhere. One of the worst possible things you can say is “I can’t find anything to write about.” We live in an amazingly fascinating world; the challenge is learning how to notice all those things that make readers and editors love you. Yes. A student telling me they don’t know what to write is frustrating. Everybody has a story. As a journalist...

Truth:
If you constantly refer to undergraduates as “stupid” or interns as “idiots” and fail to understand your role is to help them become less stupid and more well-rounded individuals — not to berate them — you should probably do something else with your life.
